No News

Isn't there a song called "No News"? Or something like that? Well it's the soundtrack to my life right now.

So does anyone have any suggestions of things I need to do to get ready for baby to come home? Only he's not a baby anymore. He's a toddler a full fledged walking, running, babbling toddler. He can probably even talk back if he wanted to and believe me if you could see him roll his eyes at me (his mother) then you would understand that he can talk back. And you know what? I LOVE IT! I adore the age he is at. He's awesome. All of him! From the way he rolls his eyes to the way he intensely adores his daddy.

So help me out. If you have a toddler at home -- what do I need/gotta have/can't live without?

Baby gates.

It's REALLY REALLY good to have a space to confine them to keep them in one place.

So in addition to having them at the bottom/top of stairs, it's nice to have them so your child can be "corralled" in the living room (or den or whatever.

I mean yes, they will be supervised at all times, but there are sometimes when you need to shower, or run to the mailbox, or make dinner or something and you cannot be DIRECTLY next to them. It's nice to know they are in a "secure" area within a place that is safe for them.

We also STILL use a baby monitor with our kids. I just like to know if they are up.

PEDIASURE. When we were trying to get Nico "caught up" we gave him like 2-3 a day since he wouldn't eat much in the beginning. Start saving now! (Although don't buy it all now because Lou might not drink it-- and then you're out of luck.)

Finally, Nico was still attached to a bottle when he came home even though he was 2.5 years old. We let him go with that for a long time. And then transitioned to a pacifier and then nothing.

Lou will probably let you know what HE wants--so don't go overboard now...

But it is fun to plan.

Also, planes and trains were Nico's favorite toys. (And now are Josiah's.)

That is a great age! For toddlers and pre-schoolers it's all about being as independent as possible and getting your hands on everything. So, I recommend a cabinet in the kitchen with his own pots and pans and wooden spoons, etc. I recommend a small hook by the front door where he can hang up his own coat and a place to put his shoes. In his room, I recommend keeping the toys to an amount that can be managed by him and put his clothes in a drawer that he can reach and help out with. A small chair or couch in the living room just his size, etc. Little stools in the bathroom so he can reach the sink by himself to wash his hands and brush his teeth. You are going to have so much fun when he gets home!!!! I love toddlers!

Doesn't this no news thing suck. Did you guys ever get an update? Hopefully we'll all be done soon, and we can spend our time chasing little guys around our houses :)

I second the baby gates! Having a really stocked fridge/cabinets and hahaha a maid would have been awesome when we got home, basic kid medicines, kids tooth brush/soap. Extra towels and blankets, a soft music CD, a sling/stroller/crib (don't make the mistake I did and leave the rails ON!) ummmm, someone who will come over once a day to hang out with you while you shower/cook/breath the first week or so...
Lots of hard toddler books-this is Avery's favorite thing-a million baby wipes and diapers, formula if needed...wine!!! lots of wine! The first two months were a total shock to me, but now things are chill and lovely. Mostly! I mean she IS two. Heh.

-I have a space saver high chair that I love. It transitions into a booster and it just straps to one of your dining chairs.
-You have plenty of cameras!
-I second the cabinet in the kitchen. Ours is full of plastic dishes and bibs and other non-breakables.
-Lullaby CD. I think our kids are used to noise while falling asleep. Pey loves his music.
-Horton Hears a Who! Pey is obsessed!
-Patience! Two year olds couldn't be cuter, busier or more stubborn!

Thanks for the wonderful advice ladies!!
Gwenn- Thank you so much for the advice, it's ultra helpful to hear from mom's who have been there!

Theresa- What great advice and things I did not even think of!!!

Tifanni- Yes we got an update but it was pretty much a duplicate of the previous four months. Not a whole lot of info in those things anymore. What I really would like to know is their perspective on our visit in December or June but so far according to the updates we have never visited.

Tamia- More great advice, thank you! I was planning on a big boy bed -- bad idea? I guess if it becomes an issue we can use a crib for a short time. He's at a tough in between age for that.

Tammie- You're awesome - perfect advice. Horton Hears A Hoo is stinkin' cute huh? :-) We got it to watch with our nephew and now I can't wait to watch it with Lou Lou!

No doubt! I was just telling Joel they could send a letter, send a fax, write it on a post-it pad!

For us the back yard swing has saved the day. It is calming and refocus any rough spells. Also a sink full of warm bubbles to stir and pour.

One more thing that is vital for our climate is a cool mist humidifier! Pey's skin has cleared up 100% since we started using one (combined with the Aquaphor) Just FYI they have really cute animal humidifiers at Target.

I second the humidifier, you never know when they can be used. As for a bed, there is a crib that can be converted to a daybed, and then later, you can use the back of the crib for a headboard to a full size bed. It works great for the changing toddler and if you plan on having more kids down the road, it can convert back to a crib.

I would say play dough and things like that are nice. my boys never tried to eat it or anything but I was there with them playing to so not like it would be hard to stop. Plus it isn't going to hurt them if they do. My boys like cars and all the galatic hero toys. They have star wars and indiana jones, transformers, super heros. And they don't have small parts. they are made for 3 and up. But Bennett is always playing with them too. I would say to get one of the safty things for your door. I know they are a pain to get open sometimes. But they learn how to open a door fast. I am so excited for you. You will be a natural at this I know it.
